    Robust trajectory planning for unmanned aerial vehicles in uncertain environments

In order to complete realistic mission scenarios, the UAV must be capable of operating within a complex environment, which may include obstacles and other no-fly zones. Additionally, the UAV must be able to overcome environmental uncertainties such as modeling errors, external disturbances, and an incomplete situational awareness. By utilizing planners which can autonomously navigate within such environments, the cost-effectiveness of UAV missions can be dramatically improved.This thesis develops a UAV trajectory planner to efficiently identify and execute trajectories which are robust to a complex, uncertain environment. This planner, named Efficient RSBK, integrates previous mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) path planning algorithms with several implementation innovations to achieve provably robust on-line trajectory optimization. Using the proposed innovations, the planner is able to design intelligent long-term plans using a minimal number of decision variables. The effectiveness of this planner is demonstrated with both simulation results and flight experiments on a quadrotor testbed.Two major components of the Efficient RSBK framework are the robust model predictive control (RMPC) scheme and the low-level planner. This thesis develops a generalized framework to investigate RMPC affine feedback policies on the disturbance, identify relative strengths and weaknesses, and assess suitability for the UAV trajectory planning problem. A simple example demonstrates that even with a conventional problem setup, the closed-loop performance may not always improve with additional decision variables, despite the resulting increase in computational complexity.     Robust Trajectory Planning for Autonomous Parafoils under Wind Uncertainty

    A key challenge facing modern airborne delivery systems, such as parafoils, is the ability to accurately and consistently deliver supplies into di cult, complex terrain. Robustness is a primary concern, given that environmental wind disturbances are often highly uncertain and time-varying, coupled with under-actuated dynamics and potentially narrow drop zones. This paper presents a new on-line trajectory planning algorithm that enables a large, autonomous parafoil to robustly execute collision avoidance and precision landing on mapped terrain, even with signi cant wind uncertainties. This algorithm is designed to handle arbitrary initial altitudes, approach geometries, and terrain surfaces, and is robust to wind disturbances which may be highly dynamic throughout the terminal approach. Explicit, real-time wind modeling and classi cation is used to anticipate future disturbances, while a novel uncertainty-sampling technique ensures that robustness to possible future variation is e ciently maintained. The designed cost-to-go function enables selection of partial paths which intelligently trade o between current and reachable future states. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reduces the worst-case impact of wind disturbances relative to state-of-the-art approaches.Charles Stark Draper Laborator

    Sampling-Based Threat Assessment Algorithms for Intersection Collisions Involving Errant Drivers

    This paper considers the decision-making problem for a vehicle crossing a road intersection in the presence of other, potentially errant, drivers. This problem is considered in a game-theoretic framework, where the errant drivers are assumed to be capable of causing intentional collisions. Our approach is to simulate the possible behaviors of errant drivers using RRT-Reach, a modi ed application of rapidly-exploring random trees. A novelty in RRT-Reach is the use of a dual exploration-pursuit mode, which allows for e cient approximation of the errant reachability set for some xed time horizon. Through simulation and experimental results with a small autonomous vehicle, we demonstrate that this threat assessment algorithm can be used in real-time to minimize the risk of collision

    Information-rich Task Allocation and Motion Planning for Heterogeneous Sensor Platforms

    This paper introduces a novel stratified planning algorithm for teams of heterogeneous mobile sensors that maximizes information collection while minimizing resource costs. The main contribution of this work is the scalable unification of effective algorithms for de- centralized informative motion planning and decentralized high-level task allocation. We present the Information-rich Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (IRRT) algorithm, which is amenable to very general and realistic mobile sensor constraint characterizations, as well as review the Consensus-Based Bundle Algorithm (CBBA), offering several enhancements to the existing algorithms to embed information collection at each phase of the planning process.     Robust sampling-based motion planning for autonomous vehicles in uncertain environments

Real-world environments may be cluttered and highly dynamic, with uncertainty in both the current state and future evolution of environmental constraints. The vehicle may also face uncertainty in its own motion. To provide safe navigation under such conditions, motion planning algorithms must be able to rapidly generate smooth, certifiably robust trajectories in real-time. The primary contribution of this thesis is the development of a real-time motion planning framework capable of generating feasible paths for autonomous vehicles in complex environments, with robustness guarantees under both internal and external uncertainty. By leveraging the trajectory-wise constraint checking of sampling-based algorithms, and in particular rapidly-exploring random trees (RRT), the proposed algorithms can efficiently evaluate and enforce complex robustness conditions. For linear systems under bounded uncertainty, a sampling-based motion planner is presented which iteratively tightens constraints in order to guarantee safety for all feasible uncertainty realizations. The proposed bounded-uncertainty RRT* (BURRT*) algorithm scales favorably with environment complexity. Additionally, by building upon RRT*, BU-RRT* is shown to be asymptotically optimal, enabling it to efficiently generate and optimize robust, dynamically feasible trajectories. For large and/or unbounded uncertainties, probabilistically feasible planning is provided through the proposed chance-constrained RRT (CC-RRT) algorithm. Paths generated by CC-RRT are guaranteed probabilistically feasible for linear systems under Gaussian uncertainty, with extensions considered for nonlinear dynamics, output models, and/or non-Gaussian uncertainty. Probabilistic constraint satisfaction is represented in terms of chance constraints, extending existing approaches by considering both internal and external uncertainty, subject to time-step-wise and path-wise feasibility constraints. An explicit bound on the total risk of constraint violation is developed which can be efficiently evaluated online for each trajectory. The proposed CC-RRT* algorithm extends this approach to provide asymptotic optimality guarantees; an admissible risk-based objective uses the risk bounds to incentivize risk-averse trajectories. Applications of this framework are shown for several motion planning domains, including parafoil terminal guidance and urban navigation, where the system is subject to challenging environmental and uncertainty characterizations.     Probabilistically safe motion planning to avoid dynamic obstacles with uncertain motion patterns

    This paper presents a real-time path planning algorithm that guarantees probabilistic feasibility for autonomous robots with uncertain dynamics operating amidst one or more dynamic obstacles with uncertain motion patterns. Planning safe trajectories under such conditions requires both accurate prediction and proper integration of future obstacle behavior within the planner. Given that available observation data is limited, the motion model must provide generalizable predictions that satisfy dynamic and environmental constraints, a limitation of existing approaches. This work presents a novel solution, named RR-GP, which builds a learned motion pattern model by combining the flexibility of Gaussian processes (GP) with the efficiency of RRT-Reach, a sampling-based reachability computation. Obstacle trajectory GP predictions are conditioned on dynamically feasible paths identified from the reachability analysis, yielding more accurate predictions of future behavior. RR-GP predictions are integrated with a robust path planner, using chance-constrained RRT, to identify probabilistically feasible paths. Theoretical guarantees of probabilistic feasibility are shown for linear systems under Gaussian uncertainty; approximations for nonlinear dynamics and/or non-Gaussian uncertainty are also presented. Simulations demonstrate that, with this planner, an autonomous vehicle can safely navigate a complex environment in real-time while significantly reducing the risk of collisions with dynamic obstacles

    Threat-aware Path Planning in Uncertain Urban Environments

    This paper considers the path planning problem for an autonomous vehicle in an urban environment populated with static obstacles and moving vehicles with uncertain intents. We propose a novel threat assessment module, consisting of an intention predictor and a threat assessor, which augments the host vehicle's path planner with a real-time threat value representing the risks posed by the estimated intentions of other vehicles. This new threat-aware planning approach is applied to the CL-RRT path planning framework, used by the MIT team in the 2007 DARPA Grand Challenge.     Threat assessment design for driver assistance system at intersections

    This paper considers the decision-making problem for a human-driven vehicle crossing a road intersection in the presence of other, potentially errant, drivers. Our approach relies on a novel threat assessment module, which combines an intention predictor based on support vector machines with an efficient threat assessor using rapidly-exploring random trees. This module warns the host driver with the computed threat level and the corresponding best “escape maneuver” through the intersection, if the threat is sufficiently large.     A Voice-Commandable Robotic Forklift Working Alongside Humans in Minimally-Prepared Outdoor Environments

    One long-standing challenge in robotics is the realization of mobile autonomous robots able to operate safely in existing human workplaces in a way that their presence is accepted by the human occupants. We describe the development of a multi-ton robotic forklift intended to operate alongside human personnel, handling palletized materials within existing, busy, semi-structured outdoor storage facilities. The system has three principal novel characteristics. The first is a multimodal tablet that enables human supervisors to use speech and pen-based gestures to assign tasks to the forklift, including manipulation, transport, and placement of palletized cargo. Second, the robot operates in minimally-prepared, semi-structured environments, in which the forklift handles variable palletized cargo using only local sensing (and no reliance on GPS), and transports it while interacting with other moving vehicles. Third, the robot operates in close proximity to people, including its human supervisor, other pedestrians who may cross or block its path, and forklift operators who may climb inside the robot and operate it manually. This is made possible by novel interaction mechanisms that facilitate safe, effective operation around people. We describe the architecture and implementation of the system, indicating how real-world operational requirements motivated the development of the key subsystems, and provide qualitative and quantitative descriptions of the robot operating in real settings.United States.
